The writers’ groups have been going for three years. From small beginnings, there are now two groups each with a slightly different emphasis. Both groups work to a schedule of topics and tasks suggested by group leaders and by the members.

The Friday morning group concentrates more on what to write while this Tuesday afternoon group concentrates more on how to write. Discussions take place in a friendly and positive manner.

The aim is simply get people writing and enjoy the process. Topics range from recounting our own life experiences to simply letting our imagination run free. Sometimes what we do can be challenging, hopefully interesting, occasionally sad, but always funny. We would look forward to welcoming new members.

This group meets 2nd & 4th Tuesday afternoon of the month in the Library.

There has been some poetry appreciation with a little bit of writing poetry. Getting to grips with our grammar control, in a lighthearted way, has also been touched on along with learning or reminding ourselves of literary terminology. However, the main activity has been writing our own pieces on different subjects, in different genres and in different voices.

At the moment, we are developing a series of characters which involves inventing backstories for each of our characters and generally fleshing them out so that we get to know each person that we have ‘invented’. The next stage is that we are going to try and bring these ‘people’ together in a play, short story, interview or whatever we can successfully develop. It’s fun as we learn from each other, find our writing strengths and share some of our favourite books/writers/poems.
